JR Pass: What's Included?

The 12-night and 14-night itineraries with JR Pass include:
- A seven-day JR Pass for travel between between Tokyo – Kanazawa – Hiroshima – Kyoto
- A reserved train ticket for travel from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka

The 16-night itinerary with JR Pass includes:
- A 14-day JR Pass

Please note that the JR Pass does not cover the full length of your trip.

Airport transfers are not included.

JR Pass conditions
  1. The Japan Rail Pass is accessible to any traveller, with a foreign passport, travelling to Japan with a ‘temporary visitor’ visa of 90 days or less (e.g. - tourist, business trip, family visit, etc.). People who travel to Japan for more than 90 days (e.g. - working holiday, military, diplomatic, cultural, research, working visa, etc.) are not eligible.

  2. Japanese citizens can buy and use the JR Pass if they reside abroad and have proof of 10 years’ consecutive residency. This proof must be issued before purchasing the Japan Rail Pass.

  3. Be aware, however, that the conditions are very restrictive. You must obtain and fill in one of the following documents:
    a. 1 - An ‘Overseas Residential Registration’ from the Japanese Embassy of your place of residence
    b. 2 - A ‘Certificate of Overseas Residence’ from the Japanese Embassy of your place of residence
    c. 3 – For the United States, Brazil and Canada, a permanent residency card (the length of residence must be at least 10 years on the day you purchase the JR Pass)

JR Pass areas of validity
  • The Japan Rail Pass is valid on all JR lines throughout Japan. This includes free use of almost all Shinkansen (Hikari, Sakura, Kodama, Hayabusa etc). From 1 October 2023, the Shinkansen Nozomi and Mizuho can also be used with the Japan Rail Pass. To take these two trains, travellers have to pay an extra charge in stations for the mandatory seat reservation (4,000 - 8,000 Yen).

  • The pass is valid on the Tokyo Monorail, some lines of Aomori Railways and some local JR buses. The pass is also valid on the JR Miyajima ferry in Hiroshima.

  • The Japan Rail Pass is not valid on private (non-JR) railway lines such as Hakone-Tozan, NankaiKoya, Fujikyu, Kitakinki-Tango. Some JR trains do travel over non-JR tracks, and JR Pass holders are required to pay a supplement for this part of the journey (either on board or at the station).

Travellers are recommended to use the official JR West website's timetable feature. By inputting your departure and arrival locations into the website, you'll be able to view the most suitable connections for your journey and plan your travel itinerary efficiently, taking any necessary changes en route into consideration.

How to exchange the JR Pass

The JR Pass will be delivered directly to your first hotel in Tokyo. It will be waiting for you to collect upon check-in. This allows you to conveniently pick up the pass and activate it on day 5, in time for your first journey from Tokyo to Kanazawa. You can exchange this at the train station upon departure.

JR Pass seat reservation
  1. Reserved seat tickets can be booked and issued for most of the trains that can be used with a Japan Rail Pass. However, reserved seats may not be booked when they cannot actually be used, such as booking reserved seats for the same time on different trains. Please reserve a seat after deciding which train you will use. If you would like to change or cancel a reservation after a seat ticket is issued, please come to the ticket window at the station.

  2. Book and pick up a reserved seat ticket at a ‘Midori-no-madoguchi’ or ticket office. Other than a reserved seat ticket machine, you can also obtain your seat ticket by showing your Japan Rail Pass at any Travel Service Center or ‘Midori-no-madoguchi’ at a JR station, or at the sales office of a JR-associated travel agency.

  3. Ticket office opening times: 4am - 11.30pm

  4. Ticket machine opening times: 4am - 11.30pm
Please note that these are the longest possible opening times. Actual opening times vary from place to place.

  5. It may take time to make a seat reservation if the service counter is busy. Seat reservations cannot be made at unmanned stations or stations without reservation capability.

  6. Shinkansen, limited express trains, and express trains have reserved Green car seats, reserved Standard car seats, and non-reserved seats. Some trains do not have non-reserved seats (all seats are reserved). There are no Green cars on most 'HIKARI' and 'KODAMA' trains on the Sanyo Shinkansen Line (Shin-Osaka—Hakata), or on Series 800 trains on the Kyushu Shinkansen Line.

  7. A non-reserved seat (except for 'NOZOMI' and 'MIZUHO' trains on the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen) can be used with just your Japan Rail Pass.

  8. With a Japan Rail Pass, it is not possible to use any seats - either reserved (including Green car) or non-reserved - on 'NOZOMI' and 'MIZUHO' trains of the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen Lines. Check the scope of available trains for details, such as available trains, cars, facilities and additional charges.

JR Pass luggage allowance
  1. When bringing baggage larger than a certain size into the Tokaido/ Sanyo/ Kyushu Shinkansen (Tokyo – Nagoya – Kyoto – Shin-Osaka – Hiroshima – Hakata – Kagoshima-Chuo), passengers are required to make an advance reservation for both their seat and the baggage area.

  2. Baggage for which an advance reservation is required:

  3. Total measurement of the three sides (length, width and height) is over 160cm and within 250cm (hereafter referred to as ‘oversized baggage’)
Please note that baggage with a side length exceeding 250cm is not permitted on the Shinkansen.

  4. Oversized baggage area
The existing space behind the rearmost seat in the train is designated as storage space. The oversized baggage area may be used by making an advance reservation when reserving the designated seat (hereafter ‘seat with oversized baggage area’). No additional charge is incurred when making the reservation.

  5. How to use the storage space
Before bringing oversized baggage into the train, make a reservation for a seat with oversized baggage area in advance at the ticket counter or seat ticket machine (if you purchased a Japan Rail Pass on the ‘Japan Rail Pass Reservation’ website, you can book seat tickets on the same website). After boarding the train, place your baggage in the designated baggage area. If you bring oversized baggage without making an advance reservation, you will be charged a carry-on fee (1,000 JPY; tax included) and will be required to store your baggage in a space designated by the crew.
Please note that seats with oversized baggage areas are for passengers with oversized baggage, in principle; however, other passengers who require baggage space for a baby stroller or other items may also use the seats. Baggage with a total measurement within 160cm may be stored in the rack above the seat.

  6. Improved service through the advance reservation system

  7. Before boarding: passengers with oversized baggage can secure the baggage area in advance and use the Shinkansen without being concerned about storing their baggage.
  8. Boarding/getting off the train: it will be possible to promptly store the oversized baggage in the pre-reserved baggage area located near the boarding door on the train, making it possible to smoothly get on and off the train.
  9. While onboard: passengers who made an advance reservation can store the baggage in the ‘baggage area’ near their seat and not have to be concerned about their baggage.
Individual train ticket offers

Please note that if you opt for one of these offers, the train schedule must be strictly adhered to, and any changes to the schedule are not permitted. Should you wish to make adjustments, they will need to be arranged independently and will incur additional costs. Trains in Japan typically run very promptly, so please arrive at the station in plenty of time.
